There is a wealth of things to see and do in the area.
Golf - The Ballater Golf course was founded in 1892 and Balgonie Grounds are situated overlooking the 15th fairway. This 18-hole, slightly undulating, medium length course is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Upper Deeside. Several holes hug the banks of theRiver Dee, lying within a circle of hills with glorious views. There are also courses in the nearby villages of Aboyne, Braemar, Banchory and Tarland. |
Walking - There is a wide range of walking to suit all abilities, ranging from the Munroes to leisurely riverside strolls. There are a number of routes marked from the village, so the car can be left at the house. |
Mountain Biking - Mountain and road bikes can be hired in the village on a half-day or full-day basis with excellent advice on routes suitable for riders of varying degrees of ability, please refer to our links page for further details. |
Fishing - Salmon fishing is available on the River Dee and the River Don, either by daily or weekly rent, from the 1st March to 30th September. A number of lochs and ponds offer brown trout and rainbow trout - some accessible by ski lift in the mountains, while others require less ingenuity to reach! |
Pony Trekking - The Glen Tanar Equestrian Centre offers lessons and hacking, the trials being through the Estate policies by the river and ancient pine forests.
Balmoral Estate also offers pony-trekking on weekends during April, May, June and July as well as occasional full-day treks during this period.
Gliding - Deeside Gliding Club, Aboyne Airfield, Dinnet. You can watch the gliders take-off and land from the parking/picnic area adjacent to the main A93. It is also possible to arrange a trip.

Cultural Activities - Many of us enjoy the less strenuous activities - and these too are catered for on Royal Deeside. Retail therapy is available in most villages, with a selection of antique shops, craft and gift shops, art galleries, artists' studios and essential coffee and cake shops. |
